Associate Experience Director

Ingram Micro
E-commerce Design System

Overview

Client SUMMARY
Ingram Micro is one of the largest suppliers of IT equipment in the world. The company had not updated their site design in over 15 years. To help improve the site experience, we did an analysis to identify key features & flows to design for the highest impact.
Challenge
If you look beyond the initial task of a site redesign, the real problem emerges. The original site wasn’t built with the user in mind and had been through a series of patchwork design fixes creating a cumbersome experience. We addressed the users’ issues of clunky site design by creating new UI patterns and reworking user flows, ultimately bringing speed and efficiency to the IT giant.
Process & Tasks
This project didn’t call for anything outside a standard project process but this wasn’t a standard e-comm redesign. One of the challenges of the design of the process was getting into the mindset of the user. Our audience were IT pros buying and reselling hardware, software and cloud services day-in and day-out. Users would be on the site for 2-3 hours at a time making purchases for clients. The IT pros needed their experience to be fast, intuitive and easy.

Competitive Analysis
Every good project starts with good research. This is just a sampling of the competitive analysis that was used to generate some foundational pillars of the project.
User Research
User Journey & User Story
You can’t build something great without knowing your user. Here you will see a sampling of a user journey and user story for the project.
Product MGMT
Sitemap, Impact Assessment & Roadmap
As a lead on the project, I took on some of the product management tasks like creating a sitemap, outlining the pages to be designed, generating an impact assessment of key features and building a project roadmap.
Product Design
Page Layouts
Even though the initial design system was created by my colleague, Mitch Lenzen, I focused on the usability of the page layouts.
Documentation
Dev Documentation & Design System
To ensure the designs built buy the dev team be pixel perfect, I created a set of documentation that would later be built into a website for other developers to utilize on future pages.
Outcome
The Ingram Micro design system was applied to the 100+ page
templates throughout the site and modified to service the 28 countries they operate in.
Learnings
Not every e-comm website has the same problems. For e-comm redesigns, most clients say “Whatever Amazon is doing? Do that.” But this was not the case for Ingram Micro, since their largest target user would be shopping for multiple clients utilizing a quoting system. We knew by making quoting efficient, we’d solve for a lot of pain points.
And we did.
